I used ready made mustard powder for this fish preparation. As we use mustard frequently in. Else you can just make it with mustard seed paste, curd, or with Eggplant. Even there is a huge divide between Bangal and Ghatis in terms of Cooking procedure.
Instructions to make Hilsa fish in mustard gravy:
- Marinate the fish pieces with salt and haldi. Keep it aside for 10 min.
- Preparing mustard paste : in mixer we make a fine paste of red mustard seeds, Yellow mustard seed, Salt and 4 - 5 green chillies
- Heat mustard oil in a Kadai till the oil changes its colour.
- Temper hot oil with kalonji and cook in medium flame till oil comes from the mixture.
- Pour mustard paste, haldi, green chillies and 1/2 cup coconut milk to the mixture and boil it in medium flame.
- Now add fish pieces slowly to the mixture and cook it on low flame for at least 10 min.
- Then add 1 tbsp of raw mustard oil over the gravy and bring it to boil.
- Hilda fish is ready to serve with steamed rice
Shorshe Ilish aka Shorshe Bata diye Ilish Macher Jhal is a famous Bengali delicacy where Hilsa Fish is cooked in a Mustard Gravy. According to me, Ilish fish is the tastiest fish in the world.
